Richard Hughes, 1929 DID NOT FINISH

I made it halfway through this novel before I had to stop. This is the 4th book on the list that I've not finished out of 52, or 7.6 percent. Not ideal, but not bad.

This book has it all: homophobia, rampant racism on every single page, rape threats, and child death.

When John died in an accident and none of his siblings EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED IT HAPPENED not to mention these children had been KIDNAPPED AND DIDN'T REALLY MIND - I mean come on! This is atrocious!! I was unwilling to see how/if/when the other children died. To be honest, the racism alone was getting to me. Not to mention the way Hughes describes gay men - obviously he had never met or seen a gay man in his life.

Length: 283 pages (too long)
