The Red Queen

Writer's picture: Kathy MillerKathy Miller

Victoria Aveyard, 2016 Read: 2/15/22

I need to preface this review by saying I'm not really a fan of fantasy or sci-fi (and this novel is kinda both). My brain just goes "wow that's dumb" and I can't get past it. The only fantasy I've read and really enjoyed were Tolkein and Terry Pratchett.

That said, this novel was okay. It was similar to Divergent, The Hunger Games, or The Maze Runner. The normal average teenager is the Chosen One (TM) who has to save their world. There's even a love triangle between two equally attractive men who fall in love with her despite hardly knowing her! One is the strong, silent soldier who has a hidden romantic side, and the other is the intelligent dreamer. Le sigh. She even has her romance from pre-Special Snowflake days to make a four-sided romance figure.

The story is formulaic but well-written and engaging. I do plan to read the rest of the series. Like those other novels, it is entertaining, but certainly not world-changing.

Time to read: About a day

ReReadability: Once you know the twist you'll not want to read it again

Classic: No. No more than Divergent was. It is basically the same story in a slightly different world. A good read but not a classic by any definition
