THIS IS THE 100TH BOOK READ!!
only 500 more..........
This novel is really really long and there are a lot of parts that add nothing to the story, tangents about an ancestor of the narrator or religion. If you took all that out, you'd have almost a perfect novel. With them, you have an absolutely fantastic novel with some fluff.
Apparently there is a movie from 2006 starring Anthony Hopkins *swoon* so I will definitely be watching that ASAP
I am aware this is a fictionalization of the life of Huey Long but I know literally nothing about him so that means very little to me. If you know Southern history better than I do, this may be meaningful to you.
I'm not interested in politics so this isn't something I'd have chosen to read. That said, it was fascinating and I loved how Warren writes. Lyrical, almost poetic, even when describing shady backroom deals.
I'm not at all surprised he won a Pullitzer for this.
Length: 609 pages in Mariner paperback
ReReadability: despite the length, yes I will read this again
Classic: Yes!
