Hermann Hesse, 1922

Date read: 2/8/25

I previously studied and practiced Buddhism, and I am glad, because otherwise I doubt I would have understood much of this novel. It is essentially about a man who becomes a bodhisattva. He knows the Buddha and is trying to attain enlightenment.

Overall it was interesting, because his path to enlightenment was through the world rather than the renunciation of it. I enjoyed it quite a lot. It reminded me of Kim by Rudyard Kipling also, in its representation of spiritual seeking and attainment.
