I'm pretty sure this is the first hard-boiled detective novel I've read, and I've been missing out. This novel was fantastic. The over-blown cynicism, ridiculous metaphors, overly contrived plot...it was great! I enjoyed every moment of it. I believe this was the first in the genre and it really set a high bar.
